Singer DAYOUNG candidly shared the reason she has not released a physical album and how her confidence has changed since her solo debut.
DAYOUNG met with Hanteo News on the 2nd at Starship Entertainment’s headquarters in Seoul and said, “When I first started preparing for my solo, my courage and confidence were at 0%. I thought if I released an album, only my mom and I would buy it.” She added, “The company said, ‘It’s your first solo, you should have a pretty physical album. Let’s print 1,000, no, even just 100 copies,’ but I said no,” and honestly admitted, “I thought it would be too sad if unsold albums were left sitting in storage.”
She also carefully shared her philosophy on albums. “If I release a physical album, what I want is a simple transparent case that can be neatly lined up on a bookshelf in the same format. So when I have ten albums someday, I want ten CDs of the same size lined up,” she explained. She added, “These days, albums come in so many different forms and the CD culture has evolved a lot, so I worry it might seem like I don’t care. But even if I release something like that later, I hope people understand that it’s not because I didn’t put in effort, I considered everything and chose it because I truly wanted to.”
As her first solo track ‘body’ received unexpected and significant love, many things changed for DAYOUNG. She said, “I’ve come to love myself more and gained a lot of courage. I shared my opinions more actively in meetings, and the overall team atmosphere became more confident. I feel happy that not only me, but the whole team gained confidence.” She also shared that recruiting dancers became much easier. “Last time it was difficult to find dancers, but this time I’ve heard that many people reached out saying they want to work with me. Some even dropped other commitments to join,” she revealed. “Still, I think I need one more boost of confidence. I couldn’t release a physical album this time either,” she added with a smile. “My confidence is about 70% now, and when it reaches 100%, I want to release a physical album next time.”
She plans to fill the remaining 30% of confidence through live experiences. DAYOUNG said, “‘body’ was released in winter, so I didn’t get many chances to perform at events or festivals. I’ve only performed outdoors two or three times, so it still doesn’t feel real.” She continued, “If I hear a crowd singing along, I think I’ll be stunned. It still doesn’t feel real since it’s only been eight months since my solo debut,” expressing her excitement. She also revealed she had a recurring dream. “I had a dream where I performed at Waterbomb, but no one knew my song. I guess because I haven’t fully experienced that popularity in real life yet, I still feel unsure,” she said with a laugh.
DAYOUNG’s second digital single ‘What’s a girl to do’ will be released on April 7 at 6 PM through various music platforms.
