[Hanteo News = Reporter KIM YEONWOO] Even the most charismatic idols on stage can reveal entirely different sides of themselves on YouTube. Some entertain viewers with their unfiltered humor, others capture attention through unexpected personalities, and some even turn projects that began as online content into actual musical activities. For idols, YouTube has evolved beyond a simple communication platform into another stage where they can showcase their individuality.

RESCENE's WONI: A Rising Star Beyond the Stage

One recent example of the growing influence of personal YouTube content is RESCENE's WONI. Her YouTube channel, ‘Hello, I'm Woni, Nice to Meet You’ (also known as ‘Anwonjalbu’), has generated buzz through its unusual combination of the Geoje dialect and gyaru-inspired concepts. Her friendly personality and playful humor, which contrast with her onstage image, have captured viewers' attention.

The channel's popularity has also translated into growing interest in RESCENE as a group. As WONI's distinctive speech patterns and character spread online like a trend, the channel even introduced its own merchandise, further demonstrating its popularity. What began as YouTube entertainment has expanded beyond casual viewing into a fandom culture of its own. This shows how personal content can highlight an artist's individuality while simultaneously strengthening the influence of both the group and the channel.

ATEEZ's SAN and WOOYOUNG: Best-Friend Chemistry on ‘9트쫑’

ATEEZ members CHOI SAN and JUNG WOOYOUNG have been showcasing their variety show talents through their YouTube channel ‘9트쫑’. The channel operates under an unusual rule: if they fail to reach 500,000 views within nine attempts, the channel will shut down. While the two members are known for their powerful performances on global stages, YouTube allows them to connect with fans through a more relaxed and humorous side of themselves.

SAN, in particular, has earned the nickname "Grand Duke of the North" for his cool, commanding aura and charisma. Yet when he is with WOOYOUNG, he reveals a surprisingly mischievous personality. Their playful bickering and candid conversations, shaped by years of friendship, offer plenty of laughs while contrasting with their commanding stage presence. Their effortless chemistry, marked by constant teasing and genuine familiarity, is what makes ‘9트쫑’ particularly entertaining. Rather than simply documenting the members' daily lives, the channel turns their friendship and offstage personalities into entertainment in their own right.

PARK WOOJIN and LEE CHAEYEON: Friendships That Began on Audition Shows

PARK WOOJIN and LEE CHAEYEON both rose to prominence through Mnet audition programs, ‘Produce 101 Season 2’ and ‘Produce 48’, respectively, before promoting as members of Wanna One and IZ*ONE. What makes their YouTube content particularly appealing is how it keeps the connections they formed through audition programs and group activities alive. Former colleagues frequently appear in their videos, showcasing the natural chemistry and friendships they have maintained over the years.

PARK WOOJIN reveals his witty and mischievous personality through his personal YouTube channel ‘Wootube’. Videos featuring fellow artists are filled with playful teasing and lively conversations. His friendships dating back to his Wanna One days, combined with his natural comedic talent, offer fans a different kind of entertainment from the charisma he displays on stage.

LEE CHAEYEON also connects with fans through her personal YouTube channel ‘캐릭캐릭 채연이’, sharing glimpses of her daily life and behind-the-scenes activities. Reunions with former IZ*ONE members are among the channel's highlights. Through candid conversations and a relaxed atmosphere rarely seen on stage, viewers get to discover CHAEYEON's approachable personality.

For both artists, YouTube has become a space where relationships formed during audition programs and group activities continue to grow. Watching familiar faces reunite allows fans to revisit cherished memories while discovering how those friendships and their chemistry have evolved over time.

From SANA to ‘Workdol’: Discovering New Sides of Idols Through YouTube Variety Shows

Idols do not necessarily need their own channels to showcase their personalities. Appearing on YouTube variety shows or serving as regular hosts can also provide opportunities for artists to reveal new sides of themselves.

TWICE's SANA demonstrated her charm as a host through ‘Fridge Interview’, a web variety show on the YouTube channel ‘117’. Rather than hosting on her own channel, SANA engaged in conversations with various guests, showcasing her natural warmth and candid reactions. One of the show's interesting features is how the chemistry with guests and the overall atmosphere change depending on the host. Seeing a familiar artist take on a different role allows viewers to discover unexpected aspects of their personality.

Another notable example is ‘Workdol’, a web variety show produced by the YouTube channel ‘Workman’. The series follows idols as they try out part-time jobs at real workplaces, introducing viewers to different occupations. Previous hosts include i-dle's SHUHUA, NMIXX's HAEWON, Billlie's TSUKI, and fromis_9's PARK JIWON. Each brought their own personality and hosting style to the program, adding a different kind of energy to the content.

As idols take on unfamiliar jobs and learn through hands-on experiences, aspects of their personalities and quick thinking that rarely emerge on stage come to light. Their spontaneous reactions to unexpected situations often become the most entertaining moments.

A similar approach can be found in ‘Changing Majors’, a series in which hosts experience different university departments firsthand. One of the flagship web variety shows on the YouTube channel ‘ootb STUDIO’, the program was hosted by BTOB's LEE CHANGSUB from Seasons 1 through 5 before EXO's KAI took over as MC. As the hosts explore campuses, attend classes, and experience university life across various majors, their individual personalities and hosting styles become central to the show's entertainment value.

Web variety shows therefore give idols opportunities to explore new roles and connect with broader audiences. While personal channels offer a glimpse into an artist's interests and daily life, web variety programs bring out different sides of their personalities by placing them in unfamiliar situations as hosts, participants, and guests.

What Started as a Joke Became a Real Debut: HyoRiSoo

There are also unique cases where YouTube content develops into actual musical activities. HyoRiSoo, a unit consisting of Girls' Generation members HYOYEON, YURI, and SOOYOUNG, began as a project on HYOYEON's YouTube channel.

As a member of the nine-member girl group Girls' Generation, HYOYEON had limited opportunities to fully showcase her individual charm amid the group's elaborate performances. YouTube, however, provided a new turning point in her career. By revealing her distinctive humor and personality through online content, she attracted renewed public attention and eventually expanded her activities through the HyoRiSoo project. In many ways, YouTube has helped introduce her appeal to a new audience, contributing to a second wave of popularity.

The project initially began with a humorous premise in which the three members competed for the main vocalist and center positions. The playful concept attracted viewers' attention and eventually developed into an actual unit. HyoRiSoo officially debuted on August 31, 2026, with its first digital single ‘Skibidi’.

What began as a lighthearted experiment in YouTube content became an exciting reunion for longtime fans while giving the general public an opportunity to discover another side of HYOYEON. As the attention generated online translated into actual musical activities, HyoRiSoo continued to receive support from fans and the broader public.

YouTube: An Entirely Different World for Idols

For idols, YouTube has become another world where they can showcase personalities that go beyond their stage personas. Through personal channels, they share their interests and everyday lives, while web variety shows allow them to explore unfamiliar roles and situations that bring out their individuality. Sometimes, ideas that begin as online entertainment even develop into actual musical projects. In this way, YouTube continues to expand both the scope of idols' activities and the different sides of themselves they can share with audiences.

For fans, this content also creates a sense of being closer to their favorite artists. Rather than encountering idols primarily through written posts, photographs, or stage performances, viewers can watch long-form videos featuring their everyday conversations, natural speech patterns, and unfiltered personalities. These experiences help narrow the perceived distance between fans and artists.

Interactions through comments and videos also create opportunities for two-way communication rather than one-sided exchanges of information. Ultimately, YouTube has established itself as both a stage where idols can explore new possibilities and a space where artists and fans can get to know one another on a more personal level.
