BTS will take the stage at the FIFA World Cup final halftime show this July. The titles alone are already enough to draw heat: co-headliners alongside legendary pop stars Madonna and Shakira, and the first-ever final halftime show in World Cup history. However, there is another reason to look deeper into this stage.
Global Citizen and FIFA announced on the 14th local time that BTS will serve as co-headliners for the halftime show of the ‘2026 FIFA World Cup™’ final, which will be held on July 19 at New York New Jersey Stadium in the United States. The halftime show will be broadcast live worldwide, with Coldplay’s Chris Martin curating the performance.
Global Citizen, which is producing this halftime show, is not simply a concert production company. It is an international civic movement organization leading the world’s largest movement to end extreme poverty, carrying out large-scale campaigns and music events to address issues such as climate change, global health, and expanded educational opportunities. This stage is expected to contribute to raising awareness and funds for the ‘FIFA Global Citizen Education Fund,’ established to expand access to quality education and sports for children in underserved communities around the world.
Through their agency BIGHIT MUSIC, BTS shared, “It is a great honor to stand on such a meaningful stage where the whole world comes together. We believe music is a universal language that delivers hope and unity. It is even more meaningful to share that message with global viewers through this World Cup and contribute to expanding educational opportunities for children.” Their statement, which mentioned “educational opportunities for children” before “No.1 on Billboard” or “sold-out shows,” clearly shows the context of this stage.
In fact, this is not the first connection between BTS and Global Citizen. The group appeared together on ‘Global Citizen LIVE’ in 2021, and JUNG KOOK took the stage at ‘Global Citizen Festival’ in 2023. Global Citizen’s decision to choose BTS as headliners for this halftime show is based on a relationship of trust that goes beyond simple buzz.
In a broader sense, this stage is also an extension of BTS’s long-running social contribution efforts. In 2017, they formed an official partnership with UNICEF Korea Committee and launched the ‘LOVE MYSELF’ campaign. The campaign, aimed at ending violence against children and adolescents, expanded in 2021 into a global three-party agreement among BIGHIT MUSIC, UNICEF Korea Committee, and UNICEF Headquarters. Funds raised together with fandom ARMY amount to approximately 9.2 billion won, which is equivalent to about 15% of UNICEF’s child protection fund.
They have also raised their voices beyond the stage. BTS spoke at the United Nations General Assembly twice, in 2018 and 2021. In 2018, RM gave a speech at the launch event for UNICEF’s youth agenda ‘Generation Unlimited,’ and in 2021, members including JIN attended and spoke at a special discussion on future generations and culture. During the spread of COVID-19, they made donations, and they also donated 1.2 billion won to the U.S. Black civil rights movement ‘Black Lives Matter.’
This halftime show will also mark BTS’s return to a FIFA stage as a full group about four years after JUNG KOOK performed the official soundtrack ‘Dreamers’ at the opening ceremony of the 2022 Qatar World Cup. The message JUNG KOOK delivered alone four years ago will now be delivered by all seven members together. The scale of the stage and the weight of the story it carries have grown just as much. Attention is focused on what message BTS will deliver to the world on July 19.
