Another song appears to be on the verge of a resurgence. Girl group BESTie’s ‘Love Options’ is drawing attention again 13 years after its release.
BESTie’s ‘Love Options’ music video is showing signs of a resurgence after ranking No. 7 on YouTube’s daily popular music video chart on the 21st.
After entering the chart at No. 64 on the 17th, it climbed 57 spots in just one day, showing tremendous momentum. This shows that it is moving beyond simply bringing back memories and leading to actual consumption growth.
Behind the renewed spotlight on ‘Love Options’ are SNS and online communities. Its honest lyrics, which wittily express the conditions of an ideal type, and its upbeat sound began spreading by word of mouth again, while the original music video and past stage videos were also consumed once more, further increasing buzz. In particular, it is being mentioned as a “hidden masterpiece,” or so-called “숨듣명.”
This trend brings to mind previous resurgence cases that left a strong impact on the K-POP market. EXID’s ‘Up & Down’ skyrocketed to the top of the charts in 2014 after HANI’s fancam spread explosively on SNS, eventually reaching No. 1 on real-time charts and leading to the group being called back to music shows. At the time, ‘Up & Down’ was recorded as a representative case in which a single fan-shot video changed the fate of a team.
Brave Girls’ ‘Rollin’’ wrote another kind of resurgence legend. A YouTube edit compiling military performance videos with witty comments spread widely, drawing a public response. Recommendation algorithms then amplified its exposure, leading it to No. 1 on Melon and major music charts. ‘Rollin’’ remains a symbolic case of platform algorithms bringing a forgotten song back to the center of the market.
For now, BESTie’s ‘Love Options’ is closer to the starting line than to the fully realized success of ‘Up & Down’ and ‘Rollin’.’ It has already shown a strong response on YouTube Music’s popular chart, but whether this will expand to major domestic music charts and broader public influence remains to be seen. Still, what is clear is that in K-POP, resurgence is no longer a coincidence, but has become a new formula for success created by the combination of platform re-exposure, short-form video spread, and collective re-evaluation.
Attention is focused on whether BESTie’s rising momentum can lead to a full-fledged chart resurgence like EXID’s ‘Up & Down’ and Brave Girls’ ‘Rollin’.’ The sight of a song that was once ahead of its time belatedly being chosen by the public has become one of the most interesting forms of rediscovery in today’s K-POP market.
