[Hanteo News = Reporter KANG SUYOUNG] ENHYPEN has been digging deep into the single well of vampires for six years. The true power of this consistency lies not in “maintenance,” but in constant “variation.”
Starting with its debut album 'BORDER : DAY ONE' in 2020, ENHYPEN has built a dark fantasy narrative. It was not a superficial concept. By intricately applying vampire codes to their music, visuals, performances, and even the overall planning of their albums, they solidified the team’s identity. Over the course of six years, vampires have become the clearest word to describe ENHYPEN.
What is worth noting is that ENHYPEN has kept the vampire framework fixed while continuously changing the texture within it. In the early days of their debut, the vampire was closer to a metaphorical device reflecting the identity and growth of boys. However, starting with the 'BLOOD' series, the tone of the narrative changed. By putting relationships connected by blood at the forefront, they sang more intuitively about blind love and intense desire. In other words, even within the same vampire material, they have brought out different stories each time. In an interview during the release of the 7th mini album this past January, JUNGWON said, “We have continued the vampire narrative since our debut, and I think ENHYPEN and vampires have many similarities,” adding, “ENHYPEN, standing between trainees and idols, is like a vampire standing between humans and monsters.” This means the concept was not just a simple setting, but something connected to the team’s own narrative. Thanks to that, their albums have been able to maintain vitality while always stimulating new curiosity within the same theme.
The variation in this 8th mini album 'THE SIN : BLISS' is “paradox.” It places the contrasting keywords “sin” and “bliss” side by side, while the title track 'Bloody Paradise' reverses the precarious situation of escape into paradise through its contradictory title, “bloody paradise.” It tells the story of lovers who look only at each other amid a crisis of pursuit and escape. On top of that, the song adds the upbeat rhythm of Brazilian funk, unfolding a dark worldview in a bright and lively way. The album takes the form of a concept album in which 10 tracks are structured like a single “mystery show,” with the narrative of fleeing lovers tightly continuing from the first track 'Two Fools' to the final track 'Hidden Truth.'
ENHYPEN’s variations do not stay only within music. One of the group’s defining characteristics is that it brings its worldview into offline and participatory content. Representative examples include its film-like “concept cinema,” “Romance House,” which implemented the album narrative as a physical space, and “Vampire Now,” a fictional media outlet of vampire society. The blood donation campaign held earlier this year during the release of the 7th mini album was a witty project that reversed the setting of bloodsucking into a real-life good deed. With this album, the group will open the music experience exhibition 'House of Vampire' at Ara Art Center in Jongno-gu, Seoul. The concept invites visitors to enter a vampire mansion after receiving an invitation based on the setting that they have become part of the same bloodline as ENHYPEN.
In the same interview, JAKE said, “ENHYPEN tried an intense hip-hop song this time and various genres before, and that was possible because we have the concept of vampires.” In other words, one framework actually became the foundation that made various attempts possible. What ENHYPEN has maintained over six years is the single frame of vampires. On top of that, they have newly changed the narrative, the genres, and the ways fans enjoy them each time. Unwavering consistency and tireless variation coexist. That is what has made ENHYPEN’s six years an irreplaceable weapon.
