[Hanteo News = Reporter JUNG JUNHWA] In the second half of 2026, Korea’s two major agencies have coincidentally introduced new girl groups with similar faces side by side. They are HYBE’s 'TUIDE' and JYP ENTERTAINMENT’s 'OURBIRTHDAY.' The two teams have entered the debut race in the same season while sharing the codes of “seven members” and “multinational.” However, a closer look shows that the two teams stand at opposite ends from the very blueprint of their debuts.
JYP’s subsidiary INIT ENTERTAINMENT will debut OURBIRTHDAY on August 19, while HYBE’s label abd will debut TUIDE on August 24.
▶︎ Same code — “seven members, multinational,” and the same season
The two teams have more in common than just the timing of their debuts. Both TUIDE and OURBIRTHDAY are seven-member girl groups, and both are multinational teams that bring together members of different nationalities and cultural backgrounds. The two teams also both set out in the same season, the second half of 2026.
TUIDE is centered on Korea while encompassing backgrounds from the U.S., the U.K., and Japan. The group consists of SEOHEE, born in 2006, SEOYEON, ELENA, and JIA, born in 2008, SAKI, born in 2010, and SEA and LEE HONEY, born in 2011. ELENA has Korean and American backgrounds, LEE HONEY has Korean and British backgrounds, and SAKI is Japanese. Its mixed-race and multicultural composition spanning the West and Asia is a defining feature.
OURBIRTHDAY embraces a broad range of Asia. Its lineup connects Korea, Taiwan, Thailand, and Japan, with JO HYEJIN from Korea, BABY from Taiwan, ACHIRAYA from Thailand, YU from Japan, KIRARA from Japan, and KOOK CHOROK and SHIN HYEWON from Korea. If TUIDE stretches toward the West, OURBIRTHDAY differs in that it is an Asia-focused lineup targeting Southeast Asia and the Chinese-speaking market.
The superficial common denominator of “seven members and multinational” is, in fact, often used in recent K-POP rookie planning. The calculation is to break down the boundaries of language and market from the start and build a structure that can target the global market simultaneously upon debut. The interesting point begins here. The two companies are holding the same ingredients, but cooking them in completely different ways.
▶︎ Different winning move ① Debut method — “one-shot full group” vs “splitting up and seeping in”
The clearest difference lies in how the debuts are introduced to the world.
TUIDE is taking a “full-group one-shot” strategy. At 6 PM on August 24, all seven members will take the stage at the same time with the group’s 1st mini album 'TUNE & PLAY.' Until its debut, the team has operated its Instagram account privately, choosing so-called “closed fan building” by pre-releasing content only to users whose follow requests have been approved. After condensing excitement through the preview event 'PLAYGROUND' on August 1 and 2, the structure is designed to explode all at once on debut day. It is a traditional yet highly dense form of “controlled release” that locks up curiosity before setting it off.
OURBIRTHDAY is the opposite. Even before its official debut, the team activated a “pre-debut unit” strategy that splits the group into smaller parts and lets it seep into the market first. The seven members were divided into Side A, consisting of JO HYEJIN, BABY, and ACHIRAYA, and Side B, consisting of KOOK CHOROK, SHIN HYEWON, YU, and KIRARA. The group pre-released the digital single 'HUNGRY Side A' on July 22 and immediately took to music show stages the next day. It is an “accumulative” design that sequentially reveals the members, imprints each of their charms individually, and then converges toward a full-group debut. In other words, the debut is not a single event but a narrative already in progress.
TUIDE concentrates maximum firepower on debut day, while OURBIRTHDAY increases contact points as much as possible even before debut. Explosion or infiltration. This is where the two teams’ marketing philosophies diverge.
◆ Different winning move ② Label and producer — A rookie label’s “bold dream” vs the proven “Park Jin-young”
The hands that made the two teams also stand in contrast.
TUIDE is the first girl group from HYBE’s new label 'ABD.' ABD stands for “A Bold Dream,” and its name carries the direction of imagining new values rather than following the conventional route of established ideas. Production is led by HYBE veteran producer Han Sung-soo MP. The team name TUIDE comes from “Tune the tide,” meaning to tune the flow of the world, and the title of its debut release, 'TUNE & PLAY,' also carries the meaning of tuning different musical languages into a single rhythm. As the first act from a new label, the group has symbolic significance as a new testing ground for HYBE’s multi-label strategy.
OURBIRTHDAY belongs to JYP’s new label INIT ENTERTAINMENT, and JYP founder Park Jin-young is personally taking the production lead. Above all, this team carries the weight of being JYP’s first new girl group in about four years since NMIXX. The team name starts from the concept of freely enjoying every moment as if every day were a birthday, while the debut song 'HUNGRY' likens an endless longing for the stage to hunger. As “the company’s highly anticipated rookie act breaking a long gap,” the weight of attention on debut results is heavier for OURBIRTHDAY.
◆ Buzz — “TWICE JIHYO’s younger sister” and “audition show alumni”
The individual narratives of the members also color the two teams differently.
In TUIDE, SEOYEON, born in 2008, is already drawing attention. She is the younger sister of TWICE’s JIHYO, and following JIHYO, a singer, and Lee Ha-eum, a model and actress, all three sisters will now be active in the entertainment industry. Coincidentally, the fact that JIHYO is a representative face of JYP makes the very structure of her younger sister debuting as a HYBE rookie a story in itself.
OURBIRTHDAY’s strength lies in the stories of its audition show alumni. SHIN HYEWON proved her all-rounder abilities on JTBC’s 'R U Next?,' while YU built her competitiveness through SBS’ 'Universe Ticket' and KBS 2TV’s 'The Entertainer,' where she finished in third place. The structure is one in which members who had already secured fan bases before debut boost the team’s initial firepower.
◆ Points to watch — Beyond surface similarity, a battle of methodology
Ultimately, the competition between TUIDE and OURBIRTHDAY is not a question of “who gathered better members.” It is closer to a battle of methodologies presented by the two companies in response to the same demand of the times, “global and multinational.”
HYBE chose “concentration and restraint,” along with a complete one-shot debut, as the first card of its new label. JYP chose “dispersion and accumulation,” along with building a narrative from before debut, as the card that breaks its four-year gap. TUIDE maximizes curiosity through closed pre-release, while OURBIRTHDAY maximizes contact points by putting its units at the forefront. Which of these two opposing grammars proves more effective in the market in the second half will be answered by their debut report cards, initial chodong, and the speed at which their fandoms come together.
